The Natural Niagara

Watch this short video to see images of the critical natural importance of our local waters, shorelines, and lands.

David Suzuki talks about "externalities" as economic development factors.

In this interview with the BBC from 2013, David Suzuki compares conventional economic development contexts using the concept of externalities, as brain damage.

Harsh Weather on the Outer Harbor

Our Lake Erie waterfront is not like Chicago, Cleveland, or Toronto. Weather on Buffalo's Outer Harbor is as rough and tumble as they come. Winds blowing down the length of Lake Erie can bring big seiches, with winds, rains, sleet and snow. These seiches can cause the lake levels to rise 8-14 feet in just a few hours.  Our history is full of stories of residential and commercial areas located on the Outer Harbor being destroyed by storms and this has included loss of life.  One of Buffalo's greatest natural disasters occurred on October 18, 1844 when a lake seiche inundated the city causing much loss of life and property destruction.  Read more here from the Buffalo History Gazette and the Buffalo Morning Express and Commercial Advertiser, one of Buffalo's early newspapers.

Modern winters can also be harsh on the Outer Harbor. These images are from Fuhrmann Blvd in 2014 and 2015.

This video, "Angry Lake Erie",  from 2014-2015 chronicles some amazing weather events at Buffalo's Outer Harbor.

November Knife (2014)
November of 2014, Buffalo was hit by a giant Lake Effect Snowstorm known as "Knife" which dropped up to 8 feet of snow in two days. The Buffalo Outer Harbor was paralyzed and at ground zero for this harsh storm. Scientists predict that this kind of storm can be expected to occur again as climate change grasps our region.

Our Outer Harbor can also be a winter place of stark beauty.  It is a place that supports winter birds such as the rare Snowy Owl, Snow Buntings, Horned Larks, and other species seeking refuge from the season.
